Legal News Canada Social Media Hazards

In legal news, Canada entrepreneurs are being warned about the risks of social media exposure after several high profile cases which resulted in defamation lawsuits due to comments posted on business social media sites. Social media continues to grow in popularity as a marketing tool for small business in the country, due to their low cost and high exposure profile.

However, the costs can be very high if you or your employees make defamatory statements, or even say anything that isn't brand friendly. For instance, a recent high profile slip up occurred when Chrysler's official Twitter account broadcast the following message "I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the motor city, and yet no one here knows how to f-king drive." The profane message embarrassed the brand, and originated with a staffer at the agency that Chrysler had hired to handle its social media messaging.
